UPnP™ Technology – The Simple, Seamless Home Network
(December 2006)
The UIC recently produced a white paper entitled, "UPnP™ Technology – The Simple, Seamless Home Network." The paper discusses how UPnP technology creates an enhanced end user networking experience, key milestones and industry relationships ( e.g., the recently formed joint alliance with the Digital Living Network Alliance), and UPnP technology's overall benefits and advantages to industry members.
These whitepapers provide a thorough technology overview.
The Ubiquitous Web, UPnP and Smart Homes
(February 2006)
ZDNet's white paper, "The Ubiquitous Web, UPnP and Smart Homes" looks at UPnP™ technology in the home. The following excerpt describes the paper's focus: "UPnP is a distributed computing framework based on Web technologies that is intended for use in local area networks - especially home networks. Over the years, valuable lessons have been learned from the efforts of various companies to develop and deploy products based on this technology. The essence of this vision is the creation of environments saturated with computing and wireless communication, yet gracefully integrated with human users. Many key building blocks needed for this vision are now viable commercial technologies: wearable and handheld computers, high bandwidth wireless communication, location sensing mechanisms, and so on. The challenge is to combine these technologies into a seamless whole."
UPnP™ Design by Example: A Software Developer's Guide to Universal Plug and Play (Paperback)
(May 2003)
Networked devices should be as easy for consumers to set up as stereo equipment—when you plug it in and turn it on, it just works. Universal Plug and Play technology can make this happen. This book is primarily a resource for software developers who are implementing UPnP technology in their products. It also provides a great introduction for those who are new to the technology.
Understanding UPnP™: A White Paper
(June 2000)
This paper provides an overview of UPnP™ architecture and how it works. Scenarios illustrate how and where UPnP™ technology improves the overall networking experience by automatically connecting and controlling various types of devices. Additional detail focuses on the components of, and protocols and procedures used in the UPnP™ architecture, and shows how existing standard protocols are used to build UPnP™ devices.
